Elementary Reading Program

 Dennis Marasco, Chairperson

The face-to-face kiwanis reading project is held at the Liberty Curtin Elementary School in Blanchard, Pa.  A hands-on project that provides students with a quality reading session before their regular school day begins.  Students in Kindergarden, First, and Second grade receive 15-20 minutes of reading time during each session.  The students enjoy the visits each month and the Kiwanians provide the vehicle to good literature and listening skills for these students.

The reading sessions begin at 7:15 AM when the Kiwanians meet the students at the cafeteria.  Each reader has selected appropriate grade level books before meeting their group of students.  The students and readers  proceed to a classroom for their reading session.   The reading sessions continue for 20 minutes and then the students are dismissed to their regular classrooms.

This program serves approximately 150 students each month and takes 2 hours to complete.  It involves 12 to 15 Kiwanians and 6 to 8 friends of Kiwanis thoughtout the school year.  Time is the only requirement for this rewarding project that benefits students and the local community elementary sch

Dennis Marasco, a past President of the  Mill Hall Kiwanis club and retired school teacher also enjoys reading to some elementary students at Curtin Elementary school.
